Due to the very stringent space requirements, the chosen solution was a combination of the Siemens ET 200iSP remote I/O system and the Airline Ex Type 8650 integrated valve island from Bürkert. The valve island is completely integrated within the remote I/O system and shares the same power supply and Profibus interface. This combination creates both a compact and flexible solution for automation tasks in Zone 1 explosion-proof areas. The compact 2 x 3/2-way valves, each measuring just 11 mm, make it possible to fit the number of valves required by Bayer into the compact control cabinets.
Highest Factory Automation Standards for Functional Safety
The project’s stringent requirements for the functional safety of the valve islands presented another challenge for the involved companies. Here again Bürkert collaborated with Bayer Technology Services to find a space-saving solution that would work within the compact dimensions of the control cabinets. The safety shut-off function for the valve island was achieved using time-tested SIL-certified, intrinsically safe valve units — Bayer required a simple yet efficient, robust and standardisable solution, which above all had to be reliable.

The ability of the Siemens ET200iSP I/O station to incorporate fail-safe signals made it possible to implement the SIL interconnection within the control cabinet. This provides reliable fail-safe operation while reducing the amount of wiring to the control cabinet: external signals from a safety control circuit are no longer needed in the Ex area, so they do not need to be routed to the cabinet. All other signals from field devices within the container — intrinsically safe electrical signals, both analog and digital, and pneumatic signals — can likewise be processed in the control cabinet.
