Chile has no economically significant oil reserves, but is rich in wood resources. Fuel from biomass provided by domestic forestry could make a major contribution to the security of the country's energy supply.

BTL is also very attractive for Chile in terms of its environmental balance. BTL is a low-emission, sulfur-free fuel which significantly reduces particulate matter in exhaust gas. Particularly in major conurbations like Santiago de Chile, BTL is an optimum solution as it can appreciably lower pollution from urban traffic.

The project represents the first step in development of a renewable energy industry in Chile. The country would like to contribute to achievement of the Kyoto Agreement goals with sustainably produced biofuels and increase local value creation by use of domestic, renewable commodities.
