Broadening the market base

The traditional market for Zeppelin Plant Engineering is the plastics and rubber industry. In recent years, the company has made the transition from a silo supplier to a system supplier. With the support of the parent company which has considerable financial resources, Zeppelin has been able to complete material handling projects in the plastics and freight distribution industries. The company portfolio includes equipment and silo systems for the plastics industry, silo systems and system solutions for plastic fabricators, the chemical industry and rubber and tire manufacturers. As a result of a highly focused acquisition strategy, the company is now able to offer a full range of key technologies including storage, conveying, metering, weighing, mixing and charging from a single source.

Zeppelin claims to be the world’s leading supplier of rubber compound processing systems for the tire industry. The Managing Director admits that the company has not escaped the effects of the economic crisis, but several large projects and long project execution times in the plastics industry have helped the company to avoid the worst. “We had projects pending from 2007 and 2008 which generated revenue this year, and that has softened the effects of the downturn.”

The acquisition of Reimelt Henschel has given the company access to a market segment which is very resilient when times are tough. As the company’s former CEO once said, “people don’t stop eating”. From the technology standpoint, there are many similarities, with bulk material handling being the common denominator. Horn emphasized the synergy effects in basic operations (conveying, metering and mixing) which are carried out in the preparation of baking ingredients and in the production of plastic granules.
