In 2015, the World Bank and the United Nations launched the ‘Zero Routine Flaring’ initiative with an aim to end the practice of routine gas flaring at oil production sites across the globe, no later than 2030. Today, after 11 years of the initiative, where do we stand?

Routine gas flaring is a widespread practice at oil production sites worldwide, as it is the cheapest option for producers to dispose of the natural gas produced alongside oil during extraction. But this process is not sustainable as it impacts human health, accelerates climate change, and releases carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as unburned methane—as flares do not always burn at 100 % efficiency—directly into the atmosphere. Apart from this, routine flaring also wastes a valuable energy resource that could otherwise be captured, monetized, or used to deliver energy to different energy deprived regions of the world.
