Qatar boosts its petrochemical industry: Only recently, Qatar Petrochemical Company’s (QAPCO) launched its new flagship–site, the world's largest low–density polyethylene (LDPE) plant. The event attracted officials and dignitaries from industry and government, such as Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar.

Doha/Qatar – “Great achievements are the result of even greater visions,” said Dr. Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada, Qatar’s Minister of Energy and Industry. “This modern facility is a direct and physical manifestation of Qatar’s National Vision 2030, guided by the country’s wise leadership. While Qatar is blessed by plentiful natural resources, it is the value that is created by refining the raw products that the country moves towards its economic diversification goals in the next two decades.”

Currently, Qapco’s manufacturing facilities consist of an 800 kilo-ton per year ethylene production, a 70 kilo-ton per year sulfur processing facility, and two existing LDPE plants with total production capacity of 400 kilo-ton per year. Now, as the new LDPE 3, that is designed to take advantage of the company’s excess ethylene feedstock, goes on–stream, it will boost the cpompany's output by an additional 300,000 metric tons of LDPE per year. The company could then raise its annual LDPE output to an additional 300,000 metric tons, insiders say.

Qatar to Become Global Power in Petrochemicals

”On a national level, the country and its people can be proud that with LDPE 3, we continue to reinforce Qatar’s position as not only a regional industrial power, but also a global one. With the launching of LDPE 3 and plans to develop other petrochemical plants, I am proud to say that Qatar is set to join the exclusive family of major petrochemical producers and exporters.”

Designed to exploit Qapco’s available surplus feedstock coming from its other facilities, LDPE 3’s products will be sold in international markets under the brand name ‘Lotrene’. LDPE is a versatile raw material used in everything from packaging films, agricultural film, extrusion and coating lamination film, high clarity film, injection molding, pipes, cables, wires, and other related products.
