Emerson points out that this can cut the costs of cabling and general installation by over 60 %. The Smart Commissioning introduced in 2016 has relieved the critical project path of one of the tasks with the greatest technical outlay. Normally, commissioning is a manual operation requiring more than two hours for each appliance, and there are thousands of appliances, explains Xavier Marchant, Vice President Process Systems & Solutions at Emerson. Smart Commissioning has reduced commissioning from the original 140 minutes to 25 minutes, says Marchant. Emerson is now in the process of reducing this to just ten minutes, corresponding to a reduction of expensive commissioning time by almost 93 %. A huge savings potential, boasts the Emerson manager.
With the addition of OPC-UA Communication to its Delta V range of hardware and software, Emerson too is seeking a seamless link between a plant’s OT (Operational Technology) systems and its IT (Information Technology) systems. Thanks to this, Delta V applications and server data can be used together with cloud analysis applications, remote surveillance solutions and third party technologies.
The additions surrounding the Delta V PK controller and Delta V mobile platform were introduced last year. With the PK controller, plant operators can control skids and package unit applications, normally administered via SPS, with an independent Delta V controller or with an integrated comprehensive process guidance system and automation architecture, or connect to the cloud via OPC UA.
The concept is somewhat reminiscent of the MTP (Modular Type Package) introduced by Namur and ZVEI. On the other hand, the mobile platform has been integrated in Delta V to allow managers, technical and operators to monitor operations and grant the quick access to critical data and alarms at any time, from any location and with no additional technical outlay.
