The global pharmaceutical industry is expected to be worth 1.57 trillion dollars by 2023, according to a report by research tech-driven company Report Linker. Major pharma export countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, the United States of America (USA), Ireland, United Kingdom and Italy will also witness significant growth. For instance, Germany the largest pharma player in the European Union has witnessed a sudden rise in anticipated growth potential in 2019/2020, increasing by 11 % from 2018, states a research report by CPhI Worldwide. This is due to wider macro changes, the continued strength of European pharma and the Brexit impact. Similarly, the pharmaceutical industry in the USA is expected to be worth 685.45 billion dollars by 2023, mentions Report Linker.

Within the pharmaceutical industry, capsule filling machines are an important segment. The global capsule filling machines market was valued at 380 million dollars in 2018 and is projected to reach 440 million dollars by 2025, at a CAGR of 1.9 % during the forecast period, states a report by Market Watch.

The New Innovative Capsule Filling Machine

In this background, the multinational Italian company Ima has plans to launch its latest capsule filling machine — the new Adapta 50 — at Interphex NY which is scheduled to be held from April 28–30, 2020 in the USA. Highlighting one of the one unique features of the new machine, Pietro Pirera, Product Manager at Ima explains, “The new Adapta 50 capsule filling machine has a built–in gravimetric scale which boasts of a 0.1 mg standard deviation and 0.01 mg display which means that it is extremely accurate. As of today, the Adapta 50 machine offers the best dosing precision in the world!”

The Dose Eighter and Dosing Disc Technology Enrolled in One!

In terms of design, the company has undertaken numerous measures to improve the in-line control of critical quality and performance attributes of its new capsule filling machine. For instance, the company has incorporated new technical solutions including the extremely accurate gravimetric scale and an in-built adjustable dosing system which controls the system. The machine is also capable of improving the handling of difficult products via its new system for powder dosing which comprises the benefits of both the dose eighter concept and the dosing disc technology. Apart from this, new sensors, innovative algorithms and feedback loops have also been included in the new flexible and modular Adapta 50.

The dosing precision is strengthened by the new adjustable dosing system while the built-in upside down scale ensures maximum accuracy in weight control and improves the quality of the final product. Flexible configuration and easy inspection are features that remain constant across all Adapta models. The new Adapta 50 capsule filling machine is an addition to the company’s previous Adapta series — the Adapata 100 and Adapta 200.

3 Questions to Pietro Pirera, Product Manager at Ima
Multiple Dosing System Meets Demand

? What are the trends in the market with respect to capsule filling machines?

Pietro Pirera: There are three trends for capsule filling machines — quality control, integration into a continuous manufacturing line and a product combination i.e. multiple dosing. Quality control: An increasing number of customers are demanding for an integrated (built-in) 100 % weight control inside the capsule filling machine. When the filling process is integrated and under the control of the checkweigher then it enables to meet the quality control parameters including the first quality parameter i.e. the weight of the capsule. It further helps to provide feedback and adjust the dosing system. Today, quality control in capsule filling machines is an increasing trend. Continuous manufacturing line: Despite a trend some years ago, the continuous process is more and more useful for companies. For instance, when a capsule filling machine is integrated inside a continuous process line, the required output is less than compared to a capsule filler which is working per batch. Product combination: Manufacturers often mix two to three powders or formulations containing different active ingredients together and these acts as an opportunity for capsules. The product combination process is normally easier on a capsule as compared to a tablet as one can combine products of different forms on a single capsule.

? What are the key market segments for these machines?

Pirera: The key market segments for capsule filling machines are pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals i.e. the food supplement industry. The machines have great demand in the pharmaceuticals segment owing to its multiple dosing system. With respect to nutraceuticals, the demand is more from westerner countries such as Europe, and the USA.

? In your opinion, do you foresee emerging pharma markets such as China, Russia, India, and South Africa as potential markets for your capsule filling machines?

Pirera: Definitely yes, we have plans to organise local events that will be dedicated to promoting not only our latest capsule filling machine — the Adapta 50 — but also our full range of capsule filling machines in these emerging markets. We already have customers that have installed several of our Adapta models at various sites in India, China, Russia as well as Africa.
