As Jouault explained, the system gives engineers greater flexibility during system design, because it makes it easy to create new configurations during the initial phases. Jouault went on to say that Solvay plans to use the technology in Tavaux, as there are a number of migration projects in the pipeline. The tests were designed to assess Hart communications, power delivery, software performance and comparable parameter sets. A small system in Solvay’s plastics lab (200 I/Os) and a larger system with 1300 I/Os and safety monitoring will be the first operational projects
Comparing old and new
The large EPCM service provider Fluor is looking for ways to shorten the project planning phase and add greater flexibility to the system design process. Vincent Grindlay, CEO of Fluor subsidiary Fluor Supply Chain Solutions, shared the results of a joint study with Emerson which compared the traditional approach using the DeltaV v10 control system with the new DeltaV Electronic Marshalling solution. Grindlay reported that the new method produced good results during the project. He said that the total savings amounted to roughly 10 percent of the overall automation package (around $2 million). Man-hours were reduced by as much as 25 percent, and the engineering and procurement effort was cut roughly in half.
It looks as if Emerson’s decision to take a user-centric approach is beginning to pay dividends.
