Energy Efficiency 24/7 Energy Efficiency — How to Benefit from Energy Management

| Author / Editor: Carsten Schmidt, Rudolf Traxler, Roland Wieser / Dr. Jörg Kempf

Site suppliers such as InfraTec Duisburg provide companies with energy and operating resources on a 24/7 basis, for example in the Duisburg industrial park. In order to offer advantages to its customers and to increase its own competitiveness, the service provider installed an energy management system which facilitates the very detailed detection and evaluation of energy flows. Moreover, savings with regard to the EEG levy (German reallocation charge) result in considerable monetary relief.

“We want to achieve compliance with the DIN EN ISO 50001 standard on energy management systems by the end of this year”, emphasizes Harald Oehlandt, head of the supply and logistics division at InfraTec Duisburg. The authorized representative expects a reduction of the company’s EEG levy (in accordance with the German law on renewable energies) from now 3.592 cents per kilowatt hour to 0.05 cent, which would result in considerable monetary savings with regard to the operation of industrial plants.

With a headcount of over 100 employees, the supplier has amongst others been serving the Duisburg industrial park since 2004. Companies such as Bozzetto, Rütgers Novares and Momentive Specialty Chemicals maintain their production facilities in this park. The company’s Duisburg site alone accounts for an annual electricity consumption between 12 and 14 GWh — which equals a saving potential of approximately 380,000 to 446,000 €/y in terms of EEG levies. Moreover, the company’s gas consumption amounts to approximately 130 GWh per year.

A further target pursued by Oehlandt is aimed at a considerably increased energy efficiency which will also be beneficial to the industrial companies domiciled in the Duisburg industrial park. This is why a project was initiated which is to reduce the influenceable costs by six percent already in 2012, corresponding to a total amount of roughly € 740,000. This applies to all operating supplies such as electricity, gas, water, wastewater, compressed air, as well as to ancillary supplies.

“How can we ensure a better positioning compared to our competitors?” was a further question to be tackled. Data evaluation on a monthly basis not only covered a way too long time frame, but also the level of detail was comparatively difficult to handle. “This is why we decided to install the Simatic B.Data energy management system by Siemens”, the authorized representative explains.
