The Namur makes it clear: The basic requirements of field devices are valid indefinitely; this factor must be considered in new development as well as further development. The decisive point for success - according to Grein – is close cooperation between device manufacturers and plant operators. This is the only way of implementing the future requirements of the market successfully.

In this context, Namur does not want to be seen as a brakeman, it asserts instead that the requirements - as they have been written down in numerous Namur recommendations, form the foundation for safe operation. In this backdrop, the work group will also take up topics of the future, e.g., handling devices that support Bluetooth, smart field devices, the Cloud maintenance, the subject diagnosis information and model strategies in connection with cyber-physical sensors as well as web servers and apps.

There is no Alternative to Modularization

The topic of modularization has been the pivot of discussion amount Namur visitor for some time now. Among the latest developments discussed this year – two years after the presentation of the DIMA concept – Jens Bernshausen (invitee, Namur), Axel Haller (ABB, Automation, ZVEI) and Dr. Johannes Wagner (Sartorius Stedim Systems) within the framework of a podium discussion on the current status.

User Wagner emphasized the importance of modern units, because pharma- and biotech projects in particular must be implemented very fast. “The engineering can be shortened and the specification phase can be designed as essentially simpler, because I do not have to discuss every individual valve with a customer. In the GMP area moreover, the documentation of pre-validated modules alone is essentially easier”, says Wagner highlighting the advantages.

Of course the implementation is not always very simple, as manufacturer Haller commented. “As automation developer, modularization opens up new markets for us, but the technology also promotes us.” The solution lies in small steps, describes Bernshausen the path, who as an invitee is experiencing the challenges of modular technology daily. The joint venture of Bayer Technology Services and the Technical University of Dortmund has been researching modular and flexible production concepts since years. Its balance: “We cannot present a 100% solution in one go, we proceed step by step.
