Prexima 300 in practice

Vitabalans Oy tested the tablet press at the manufacturers facility using two food supplement formulations for direct compression. Vitabalans needed to demonstrate high throughput alongside good product quality in the manufacture of heavy (approximately 1.5 g) oblong tablets. The trial used a Prexima 300 tablet press equipped with a two-paddle feeder, which was able to provide the requested weight uniformity at high production speeds. The observed standard deviation of the compression force was kept within 3-4 % during testing. Compliance with Vitabalans’s acceptable weight limits was successfully met by using the machine’s automatic control loop, with the target compression force as an input variable. The flexibility of the software in terms of control limits and correction factors allows the dosing step to be finely tuned, and so helps to maintain a constant tablet weight during production. Due to the flowability of the product, the best results in terms of feeding uniformity were observed at medium-high paddle speeds. To meet Vitabalans’s requirement for tablet hardness, a relatively high compression force was required. The Prexima is equipped with two compression rollers of the same diameter, enabling it to apply the same pre-compression and main compression forces as required by the process. For this application the machine was equipped with Eu-D type 441 tooling to further extend the compaction time.
