Instant herbal teas from Swiss natural products manufacturer Ricola are very popular with consumers. To allow the teas to unfold their full soothing effect, they are produced with the help of a special method which ensures a consistently high fraction of active ingredients and flavors. Part of this method involves gentle milling using the MF series of oscillating sieve mills from Frewitt.
The oscillating sieve mills of the MF series were originally developed for the gentle milling of heat-sensitive products in the pharmaceutical industry. Later these mills acquired a permanent place in the food industry as well.
The main way in which MF series mills differ from their more conventional relatives is that the “rotor” of an MF mill does not turn through complete rotations. Instead, the rotor oscillates over a sieve at a rate of 27–400 oscillations per minute, depending on the application.
This operating principle has numerous advantages. The gentle milling action generates only a minimal amount of heat, and yields products with a very uniform grain size distribution and a very low proportion of fines. The system is also very versatile. MF series oscillating sieve mills can produce particle sizes from 50 mm and right down to 250 μm, and can handle a wide variety of products. They have proven effective for milling many wet and dry materials as well as sensitive products. The mills are available to cover a wide spectrum of throughputs, ranging from 100 g/h for laboratory applications to 4 t/h for industrial use.
