According to a study conducted by the European Commission, a typical laboratory building uses around five times as much water as similarly sized office buildings. This is not very surprising, since pure water is the key reagent of all experiments. Thus, water quality and purity are essential to successful research.

70 % of HPLC performance problems are thought to be directly attributed to water purity. For instance, in order to solve molecular structures using a 2D NMR approach, pure water is a key requirement. Water impurities can affect most enzymatic reactions needed for molecular biology.
