How to Eliminate Contamination

For batch mixing processes requiring absolute freedom from cross-contamination, container systems are the only solution. Applications from the food industry include the handling of nut-free, halal and kosher ingredients.

The lowest cost is achieved with a sequential weighing system such as the Azo Componenter. Here each material is stored in a dedicated container which docks onto one of a series of container discharge bases using a patented docking collar. The containers are identified and registered automatically, operators are not exposed to the product, and the transfer is dust-free thanks to an integral dust extraction ring.

To assemble the batch, a recipe-controlled mobile floor scale moves into position automatically beneath the appropriate discharge point. Each discharge base is fitted with a dosing screw which uses two-speed (coarse/fine) control to transfer material accurately to a container on top of the weigh scale. Special-purpose scales can be added for ultimate accuracy when dosing small quantities of ingredients. As soon as the batch is complete, a report is generated and the container is transferred to the supply point for further processing.

Higher throughputs demand parallel processing; the new Azo ShuttleDos system is in its element wherever there is a need for fully automated handling of many recipes, each made up of many components, in a closed system with strictly separated lines and zero contamination. The system can handle 20 batches per hour, each with up to 10 precisely weighed components ranging in weight from 100 g to several hundred kg.

ShuttleDos doses components into mobile containers fully automatically. The raw materials can be stored in silos, delivered in big bags or containers, or added from sacks via feed hoppers. The storage bins are fitted with powerful discharge and dosing units, each equipped with its own weighing scale. This arrangement allows optimum configuration of lines, with separate areas for large, medium, and small components.

The crucial elements in the ShuttleDos system are the mobile shuttles which transport the containers to the point of use and back again to the weighing stations. The entire system operates clear of the grand, with no need for human intervention, and at high throughputs. Energy efficiency is high.
