In addition, the connections and materials used must comply with special official requirements and standards (e.g. cGMP, VDI 2083, “EU Guidelines to Good Manufacturing Practice”), and the certification of such systems is also subject to legal regulations. Even so, these are all solvable problems. The rewards lie in the significant cost reductions – and there is currently tremendous, as yet untapped potential for cutting costs.
The challenges confronting the food industry are similar to those facing the pharmaceuticals industry, as both have a particular interest in microbiology, i.e. in protecting against microbial contamination and increasing the longevity of pharmaceuticals and foods. Cutting and packaging meat offers a particularly large target for potential pathogens.
This is an area in which supply and return air management with low-turbulence laminar flow in combination with multi-stage air filtering offers a good solution. The method is already common practice in the pharmaceuticals sector, and there are more than a few meat processors who would do well to adopt it to optimise their own facilities.
Small is Beautifull – A Cleanroom for Everyone
In both the semiconductor and medical technology sectors, there is a major trend towards smaller cleanrooms, offering each industry the opportunity to learn from the other while also serving as a useful example to other sectors. In the pharmaceuticals sector, existing cleanrooms are great for their intended purpose, yet it would be possible to greatly lower their operating costs – something that would benefit the related chemical industry as well.
The food sector is currently in the process of aligning its standards with those of the pharmaceuticals industry, which are even higher. Everywhere you look, there is much to learn from one another, such as at a trade fair that brings together numerous fields and disciplines. Fostering this interdisciplinary transfer is one of the objectives of Cleanzone in Frankfurt, which will be taking place for the second time on 22 and 23 October.
