That is why only the most sensitive components should be located inside a cleanroom, with machines and devices that can be “unclean” linked to it externally. The most cost-effective cleanroom is one that an operator has been able to do without thanks to measures such as these. Another challenge that will be accompanying the next generation of wafers is the planned implementation of larger diameters: 450 millimetres instead of the 300 millimetres in use to date.

Cleanrooms for Chemical Applications...

A move in the direction of local solutions for small cleanrooms has come at just the right time from the fields of medicine and medical technology. As an example: in order to get ready for an operation, everything – including surgical instruments, implants etc. – has to be prepared. Some of these materials have generally been produced in a central workshop for an entire region, or even the entire world, in large cleanrooms. Examples of this method include individual drill templates produced using stereolithography for the dental sector.

Now, however, there is a trend towards transporting portable cleanroom containers by truck to hospitals or doctors' surgeries, where the medical equipment is prepared and produced directly on location and given to the doctors and surgeons in a sterile state. This trend towards smaller units can be expected to become increasingly evident in the fields of semiconductors and microelectronics as well in future as these industries take advantage of experiences in other industries.

...Inspired by Medical Technology

Another instance in which the medical technology field has served as an example is the production of synthetic dental drills made of PEEK (polyether ether ketone). These disposable dental instruments may make it possible to retain more of the teeth when removing caries in future, as their hardness is exactly in the range where they are able to grind away tissue that is no longer healthy while being dulled by healthy dentine, leaving it intact – Now womnder these instruments must be aseptic...
