... In his view, the IPC could also be called I/O-PC, since it can be mounted on the mounting rail at a 24 V level and I/O modules can be directly queued up. “Secondly, it has the characteristics of a classic PLC: rugged, small and can be programmed like a memory-programmable control unit according to IEC 61131. Finally, it integrates the open standards of the PC world as IPC.”

Flexible and Modular Process Control

“In process automation, we frequently need an alternative for large and complex control systems. This easy to use PLC, however, must still meet the highest quality demands. The Wago system has positioned itself here and proven itself in practice. It uses standard hardware, standard protocols, as well as standard interfaces. We therefore can select various suppliers for the peripherals. If a terminal malfunctions, we only need to replace it and not the entire assembly. Even the programming using standard tools such as CoDeSys or MS-SQL server makes the solution much more cost-effective,” added the manager of the engineering office.

Flexibility Appreciated

He especially appreciates the flexibility in the integration of sensor and actuator signals. Since the I/O system has been used very successfully for years in automation technology, more than 400 various I/O modules are available for industrial requirements for various analog and digital inputs and outputs. The modules are only 12 mm wide in many cases and can be added as needed.

Practical Decentralized Process Control

The decentralized process control system has proven itself at Novartis. In a treatment plant for extracting an active substance, various media are initially mixed in an equipment group and temporarily stored and conditioned in a further process. The control system thereby provides the proper processing supply of the joint resources via a closed loop network, such as cleaning agents, pure steam and purest water and takes over the coordination duties, such as filling into portable containers, the transfer between the equipment groups and the control of valves.
