Following the standardisation of SPE connectors, first sensor components with the two-wire Ethernet are coming onto the market: the sensor specialists Jumo, for example, are relying on SPE to combine consistent Ethernet communication with simple and inexpensive installation.

For the first time, Jumo has taken up the possibilities of SPE technology (Single Pair Ethernet) for direct Ethernet integration and implemented them in three new sensor products.(Source: Jumo)

The choice of SPE technology should now give users the possibility to use complete system solutions with a continuous Ethernet transmission in their applications, the developers explain. This aspect simplifies commissioning and opens up further exciting advantages: SPE provides a physical layer on which a variety of Ethernet-based protocols can run.

SPE is only the physical layer on which a variety of Ethernet-based protocols can run. For the new sensors, Jumo has chosen the 10BASE-T1L standard, which allows cable lengths of up to 1000 metres. The individual sensor components do not need any additional cabling, but are supplied directly via Power-over-Dataline (PoDL). The connection is realised by means of an SPE connector with protection class in M12 design. Specifically, Jumo integrates SPE into the Hydrotrans sensors (humidity, CO2 and temperature transmitters), the Flowtrans Mag H20 flow transmitter and the Delos S02 pressure sensor. Data transfer is based on Ethernet, which is why the sensor can exchange data directly with the controller and simultaneously with the manufacturer's Cloud. For communication with the controller, the user can fall back on Modbus TCP.
