There have been many incidents around the world where a fire or an explosion has occurred at an industrial plant, leading to loss of money, productivity and even life. To curb such accidents from happening again, industry players opt for solutions that are explosion-proof or flameproof as it significantly reduces and even eliminates the likelihood of a dangerous catastrophe.

With industrial plants, there is always a risk of fire or an explosion which can damage the facility and lead to costly downtime, environmental concerns and even prove fatal for plant workers. (Source: © pornthip - stock.adobe.com)

Safety is given utmost importance across industrial plants as these facilities handle a wide range of highly flammable chemicals as well as hazardous materials. With such plants, there is always a risk of fire or an explosion which can damage the facility and lead to costly downtime, environmental concerns and even prove fatal for plant workers. To mitigate these risks, industry players make sure to incorporate numerous explosion (Ex)-proof or flameproof solutions in their plants. Although both of these solutions offer protection in hazardous spaces, they have their own unique features. For instance, explosion-proof solutions are specifically developed to contain an explosion within an enclosure. It also ensures that flames or gases do not escape the enclosure thereby ensuring that the surrounding areas do let catch fire. Explosion-proof solutions follow NEC and UL standards.

Flameproof solutions on the other hand are designed to prevent an ignition and make sure that any internal explosion is controlled within the enclosure. In this kind of solution, the gases are also cooled down before escaping. Flameproof solutions follow IEC and Atex standards. In many countries, the installation of such solutions has also become mandatory.
