The company is a leader in cryogenic valves with a global installed base of over 25,000 units in sizes up to 54" (1,350 mm). Supplies have been made to many LNG plants spread across the globe from USA through Nigeria, Qatar and Saudi Arabia to Australia. The cryogenic range comprises gate, globe, check, ball and triple-offset butterfly valves.
“Cryogenic service poses unique challenges in design, metallurgy, manufacture and testing of valves. The service demands bubble-tight sealing of metal-seated valves at cryogenic temperatures. Dimensional and structural integrity during temperature cycles is critical. Further, valves are subjected to stringent performance and fugitive emission tests at extremely low (negative) temperatures,” summed up Venkatasubramanian.
Powering up the Power Sector
This sharp focus on engineered solutions has enabled L&T Valves to emerge as key manufacturer of valves for critical applications, approved and accepted by the global majors in oil & gas.
Oil & Gas is not the only segment where the company is at the forefront. L&T Valves has a long and successful track record in the power generation sector as well. Liberalization of the segment and launch of Ultra Mega Power Plants (UMPP) with supercritical technology provided the company a chance to enhance its engagement with the industry.
Elaborating on the valves in this sector, Venkatasubramanian said, “The higher temperature and pressure of supercritical service demands valves in pressure ratings up to ASME Class 4500, in 9 Cr steels. The valves have to be structurally robust to withstand the severe service conditions and extended service life requirements.”
