Speaking about effective human–machine interaction, Milan Desai further mentioned that in the future, man and systems will use internet technologies and communicate directly with one another. “This might eliminate the hierarchical structure,” he continued.

However, these challenges can be met with the innovations and latest technologies. “Industries will have to work towards realizing a modularized plug and play type of process, which will not only provide efficiency but also add flexibility to accommodate changing needs. This will help in early adaptation to attain necessary fitness to sail through the challenging environment,” Davesar mentioned.

The Requirements for Advanced Process Control

Adding to it, Sivaram averred, “It is sensible to have a process control system, which is scalable and advanced enough to take care of plant capacity expansions and integration of open technologies from various vendors. One example could be the APROL process control system from B&R Industrial Automation, which provides such scalability making it attractive even for a small plant. Advanced features such as business intelligence can be effortlessly added when desired.”

Meanwhile, Milan Desai voiced a point about a new set of risks. “One also has to consider technology-related risk. For an example, with regard to mass customization, the number of variants to be manufactured on a single automated production line is constantly on the rise. The start-up time also increases disproportionately with the number of variants. Therefore, the process station should be easily adaptable both to known and foreseen product variations,” he said.

Horizontal vs vcertical Integration

Voicing another perspective, Hemal Desai stated, “In horizontal integration, along the value creation chain, an exact forecast of consumption, based on current inventory values and already planned material movements, is the key to reducing warehouse stocks and improving delivery service. Reliable measurement technology is the basis for this.”
