Japan: Feed Additive Production Sumitomo Chemical Expands Methionine Capacity
Sumitomo Chemical expands the production capacity of their feed additive methionine by adding a new production line of its Ehime Works in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan.
Tokyo/Japan – With this expansion, the company will increase its annual production capacity by approximately 100,000 tons, bringing the total production capacity for methionine to approximately 250,000 tons per year. The new facility is scheduled for completion in mid-2018, the Japanese chemicals producer announced. According to the company, this step was taken in order to ensure its competitiveness on the market for feed additives.
Methionine is an essential amino acid that cannot be synthesized in an animal body. It is widely used as a feed additive in livestock industry mainly for poultry feed to increase productivity of chicken meat and eggs. The global methionine market is estimated currently at 1.1 million tons. It has grown at an annual rate of about 6 % last year and is expected to continue its growth at the similar annual rates.
