Small scale cell culture reactors for laboratory application often require the same cleaning time, autoclaving effort and re-installation hassle as their bigger industrial counterparts do. Furthermore the repeated use of the same reactor can easily increase the risk of cross-contamination. Sartorius now tries to meet the needs of laboratory workers with their new single-use bioreactor UniVessel SU.

The UniVessel SU is suitable for mammalian, insect and plant cell culture in scales up to two liters volume. Typical applications range from small-scale protein expression to media or process optimization studies. The vessel is irradiated prior to delivery and therefore ready to be used out of the box. Sartorius claims to have followed the same safety standards that are required for classical multi-use bioreactors in the reactor design. Nevertheless the complete culture vessel is disposed after use, reducing cleaning time, handling hassle and the risk of contamination.

The reactor is designed for cell culture applications in research, development and production. The single-use vessel can be connected to all Sartorius Biostat benchtop bioreactor controllers as well as other controllers for conventional glass reactors. When working with existing systems, classical pH and DO sensors as well as Pt100 temperature probes can be inserted via top plate ports.

Made of USP class VI conform polycarbonate, the UniVessel includes several ports for media addition, sampling, harvesting as well as spare ports for insertion of classical sensors or other equipment suitable for pg 13,5 ports. The system features three-blade segment impellers and an L-sparger for the use in cell culture applications.

The torospherical bottom as well as the height/diameter ratio of the reactor are similar to the design of Sartorius' classical glass UniVessel-series. All tubings for media transfer are made of thermoweldable tubing and feature common Luer or MPC connectors for connection to peripheral equipment. Four feet at the vessel bottom provide for a secure stand when handled, for example, under a laminar flow cabinet. Additionally, a stainless steel vessel holder provides a support stand when the device is in operation. For sterile process conditions Midisart BV air filters for sparger, overlay inlet as well as the gas outlet are used. Temperature control is performed by a heating blanket and a filter heater is included for the exhaust filter is included.

Single-use, pre-calibrated sensors for optical measurement of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) are available and allow for easy and contamination-free measurement together with the company's Biostat B-DCU II benchtop controller. The calibration data are displayed as a barcode on the vessel label and can be transferred via a barcode reader directly into the controller. Already used in other single-use cell culture devices by Sartorius Stedim Biotech, this principle of non-invasive pH and DO measurement is now also available with small-scale single-use bioreactors.
