Benefits galore
One of the first few advantages that Rohag noticed was the timesavings that it enjoyed almost immediately. Peng recalled, “An inspection job used to take us around five hours to complete, but using the Faro Arm, it would only equire three hours. That is a 40 per cent improvement!”
Besides an increase in efficiency, the company also enjoyed other benefits with the addition of the Faro Arm to its suite of inspection tools. Using the Faro Arm, Rohag began to address larger components that the older tools could not handle. The Faro Arm is capable of measuring parts of varied sizes (up to 1250 mm) while still providing accuracies of up to 0.001 inch (0.025 mm).
The portability offered by the Faro Arm greatly simplified the inspection job for the team at Rohag. Instead of having to transport parts to a measurement room, the Faro Arm can simply be eployed right on the shop floor, where production takes place. That way, the team saves on the time and effort that would have been spent moving components around. Rohag also minimizes production downtime since quality checks can be done right on the machines as well.
In addition, Rohag gained the new competency of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) on the components. A system that communicates engineering tolerances, GD&T clearly states the nominal geometry of a given part and its allowable variation. “Prior to using the Faro Arm, we could not acquire the measurements necessary to perform GD&T analysis on our components,” revealed Peng. “With Faro’s help, we have learnt how to make full use of the device to obtain such measurements.”
Future forward
Since its first purchase, Rohag has added several newer units of Faro Arm to its collection of tools at regular intervals. At present, the company owns a total of six units of Faro Arm, in varying lengths and models. The Rohag team utilizes the portable CMMs every day for at least 6–8 hours, with three people sharing a unit at any one time. Business expansion may require further additions, and Rohag may explore devices with non-contact scanning capabilities in the near future.
Evidently, Faro solutions have proven to be useful and Rohag has been pleased with the support rendered by the Faro team. Peng expressed, “Without a doubt, the Faro Arm is our go-to choice for a portable CMM. We are certain that no other device out there would have fulfilled our needs in the same way, and we value this partnership deeply.”
