Assessing Performance – The Key to Process Improvement

Written/oral tests or performance demonstration can be used for verification. While the tests are not found to be quite reliable, they are widely practiced as it is easy to carry out. Performance demonstration is no doubt quite dependable and considered as one of the best methods for verification. It normally consists of a series of close sessions where the experienced trainer allows the trainee to watch him performing; subsequently, he watches and coaches the trainee and tests him ultimately.

Many successful organizations have used observations at work as an effective training tool especially for assessing performance as well as training needs. It is an effective tool to achieve human reliability. It is very individualistic engaging both trainer and the trainee actively, making the trainee quite comfortable, ensuring his full attention and understanding of the activity being performed and finally agreeing to do certain changes. Though it is very time consuming, it is the most effective for all tasks in a hazardous industry.

A Checklist Can Help!

Taking an example of training to drive a car, as the trainee approaches a right turn, he is observed to go through a mental checklist (checking for other vehicles, activate signal, slowdown, etc.,) and appreciated on correct/safe behaviors and counseled on unsafe/improper behaviors. Similar application in an industrial environment can be for batch charging (more rule-based), starting a pump (more skill-based), and troubleshooting a quality issue (more knowledge-based) but all behavior critical.

Well known human performance tools like Behavior Based (BB) programs, Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC), Human Performance Technology (HPT) approach, etc., are quite useful. Training programs become effective when they explain how the process works, why certain action helps, what might cause failure and consequences if not done properly with few case studies. This will help

the trainee to understand and facilitate ‘thoughtful compliance’. Best training sessions enhance the individual attributes like knowledge, commitment, awareness and attention to detail.

Good Examples from all Over The World

One good example of a state-of-the-art training center is the Chemical Process Technology Centre (CPTC), an impressive training center located on Jurong Island, Singapore, which has been managed by Petrofac for the Economic Development Board of Singapore since June 2008....
