Malaysia: Petrochemicals Complex Petronas Starts Trial Runs at "Rapid" Refinery Project in Malaysia

Reuters reports that the Malaysian state oil company Petronas started trial runs at the crude distillation unit (CDU) for a joint-venture refinery with Saudi Aramco in Malaysia, quoting two sources with knowledge of the matter.

Singapore/Malaysia — The $ 2.7 billion project called "Rapid" (Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development) is located in Pengerang. Commercial operation is scheduled for start-up for 2019. The refinery has a capacity of 300,000 bpd and the Steam Cracker will have a combined annual production capacity of more than 3 Mtpa of Ethylene, Propylene and C4 to C6 olefins products.

According to engineering partner Fluor, the integrated complex is the largest project ever undertaken by Petronas and the largest single construction project in the country of Malaysia. It occupies an area of approximately 25 million m2.
