From gigantic plant modules delivered to the site to ~2,500 workers from around 80 contractors working on site, Ineos’ 5-billion-euro project—Project One, claimed to be Europe’s most sustainable cracker—is finally coming together at the Port of Antwerp in Belgium.

With a capacity to produce 1450kt of ethylene annually, Project One’s carbon emissions will be no less than three times lower than those of the average cracker in Europe! Also, the project’s carbon footprint per ton of High Value Chemicals is expected to be less than half as compared to the top 10 % crackers in all of Europe! This is precisely why Ineos, the British multinational chemical and energy conglomerate, claims Project One to be Europe’s most sustainable cracker. This is not all! The project is also the largest investment in the region’s chemical sector in the past 2 decades.

Expected to start up in the second half of 2027, Ineos Project One will produce ethylene by making use of ethane as feedstock as opposed to naphtha. Europe’s cracker fleet remains predominantly naphtha-based, a legacy of older units designed around that feedstock and its energy-intensive cracking process. Project One departs from this by using ethane, which offers lower cracking energy requirements and greater feedstock efficiency.
