PROCESS: BTS is positioning itself as a technology consultant, for example with the BayOpX operational excellence program. What has been the customer response to this strategy?
Van Meirvenne: We are very encouraged by the Operational Excellence projects. A number of production system optimization projects are currently underway with members of the Bayer team in other parts of the corporation. Everyone involved is working together to drive the process. We see a lot of growth potential for us as well as optimization potential for our customers. In addition, energy and resource efficiency have become major market issues.
PROCESS: Can you identify a serious competitor in this business segment?
Van Meirvenne: To be honest, no. That again has something to do with our owner’s mentality. Our holistic approach to plant design and construction and process optimization is absolutely unique.
PROCESS: A stronger focus on emerging markets increases the international mix in the workforce. How will you be able to assimilate these employees and their expertise?
Van Meirvenne: That is one of our biggest challenges. For a technology company like BTS, globalization involves a process of adaptation, for example by standardizing our engineering solutions. We do not always have to reinvent things everywhere. We can share the expertise, which is not evenly distributed everywhere, with these regions. E-mail is not the only tool of achieving this. We also have to put the right organizational structure in place, and that necessarily involves people.
