Hyundai's Engineering and Construction business will build a 140,000-Barrels Per Day refinery at Karbala, Iraq. The country's State Company for Oil Projects (SCOP) has awarded a US $ 6.4 billion EPC contract to the Koreans.

Baghdad/ Iraq – The project scope includes a crude distillation unit, vacuum distillation unit, vacuum gas oil hydrotreater, diesel hydrotreater, kerosene hydrotreater, fluid catalytic cracking unit, amine regeneration unit, hydrogen production unit, sulfur recovery unit as well as associated infrastructure and utilities. Construction is expected to start in early 2015, with a completion in 2019. The project has been in the pipeline for about six years now, but was delayed by financial issues and political problems in Iraq.
