Evonik is directly involved in the project (two polymer reactions), and Lang has already achieved a considerable degree of success. "We have an Evotrainer on order for a sample reaction.” The production system is scheduled for completion this year.
The fact that the reactions are spread across a number of industries and a diversity of companies are on board is very much in line with Hessel’s declared goal of taking microreaction technology and process intensification into areas that previously have had little contact with them. In addition to Evonik, two Italian companies (Chemtex, Mythen), a Finnish firm (Avo Academi) and a company from Scotland (ITI Energie) are involved in the project. “By using Italy as a test market, we have brought Europe’s fourth largest chemical producer on board,” said Hessel.
The Copiride project is of course working to an aggressive schedule. Hessel plans to begin constructing the pilot system at the end of this year. He wants to use half of the time available for the project to operate the container. That is when the time will come, he says, to separate the wheat from the chaff.
