Looking ahead

The chemical industry in India has had to suffer the consequences of being termed a ‘polluter’ and other such negative associations in clear public view. To help overcome this, ICC has joined hands with Tata Chemicals Ltd to establish SPRUCE (Society for Promoting Responsible User of Chemicals). The overall aim of this initiative is to help spread awareness about the immense role chemicals play in improving the quality of life; a fact that, the ICC believes, every conscious citizen should be aware of. To this end, SPRUCE has focused on positive positioning of the Indian chemical industry and is also working to bring new talent into the sector.

Even as the Indian chemical industry is battling to hold its own against foreign giants,

experts such as Mr Lohokare believe that the future of this industry holds a lot of promise.

They foresee steady growth figures for the industry as a whole, and significant growth for the petrochemicals and speciality chemicals segments in particular.

Mr Lohokare even goes so far as to predict a “huge scope for development of the pharmaceuticals segment”, which, he believes, may also start dabbling in new chemical entities in the near future.

Another effort to regularise development in the domestic industry is the National Chemical Policy which, experts say, will focus on basic chemicals and the fertiliser segment in particular, where development is crucial.

The policy was welcomed by players in the domestic chemicals industry. Mr Lohokare also feels that having this policy in place will encourage propylenebased chemical manufacturing to enhance the availability of feedstock. Uncertain as ever, brimming with possibilities and fizzing with challenges, whoever said making chemicals was simple!
