Special Centrifugal Pumps Toxic, Caustic, Harmful? No Problem for these Special Centrifugal Pumps!
For decades, intrinsically safe pumps have been known as a problem-solver — as a result, this is also true for the centrifugal pump manufacturer Bungartz with its permanently safe pump performances. Numerous — even unusual — examples from the chemical industry and related areas verify this statement. A globally active company is only one example of those benefiting from the extensive experience the pump experts bring to the table. Due to a change implemented by a supplier, the company is reliant on a reliable pump solution for its production process.
Gaseous sulfur dioxide (SO2) is required for the manufacturing of a pharmaceutical product. “It is a pressure-liquidated gas mainly used in the chemical industry as well as in pulp and paper manufacturing,” explains Marcus Zellhorn, responsible plant engineer of Sanofi. Almost 10,000 employees work at the healthcare company in Germany. They research, manufacture and distribute active ingredients, medical products and medical devices, and supply patients all over the world from this location. The largest site in Germany is the “Industriepark Höchst” industrial park.
High Safety and Risk-Free Emptying
The SO2 required — also used as a preservative in the food and beverage industry — is a toxic and pungent substance, which may be harmful to humans and the environment if handled improperly. Depending on the concentration, this may lead to acid burns of the respiratory tract, the skin or the eyes. Therefore, when used, comprehensive protective measures must be observed. In the industrial park, the companies were supplied with gaseous SO2 via a ring circuit, which was made available by the supplier on-site up to now. In the future, the liquid gas is to be delivered in transport containers. The challenge is: The medium SO2 required for the manufacturing of the active ingredient metamizole for treating pain and fever must be transported to the production site. The dangerous substance must be stored outside of the building, in which it is required, and be transported to the third floor at the time of the assignment.
