Thyssenkrupp Uhde, Uniper to Collaborate for Large-Scale Ammonia Cracker

June 02 – Thyssenkrupp Uhde and Uniper are entering into a strategic partnership to bring a key technology for global hydrogen trading to industrial maturity: the large-scale ammonia cracker. In an ammonia cracker, ammonia is catalytically broken down into its components, hydrogen and nitrogen, at high temperatures, and pure hydrogen is then produced in a purification process. In a first step, a demonstration plant with a capacity of 28 tons of ammonia per day will be built at Uniper’s Gelsenkirchen-Scholven site in Germany. The plant will be one of the first of its kind in the world and will serve as the basis for the planned hydrogen import terminal in Wilhelmshaven, northwestern Germany, where the technology is to be applied on a large industrial scale in a second step.

The aim of the partnership is to convert imported ammonia into hydrogen on an industrial scale and make it available for a wide range of industries such as energy, steel, and chemicals. The cooperation marks an important step towards strengthening energy security and the sustainable transformation of energy-intensive industries. The use of ammonia as a transport and storage medium makes it possible to provide green or low-carbon hydrogen from global production sites in large quantities at low cost – a prerequisite for the successful ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.

The project is supported by funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia to realize innovative components of the demonstration plant at the Scholven site. The plant serves to gain knowledge for the subsequent construction of a large-scale commercial plant. Both companies are also contributing significant funds of their own.

June 04 – Air Liquide will build, own and operate, through a significant investment of around 70 million euros, a new industrial gas production facility in Singapore. In the framework of the long-term agreement, large volumes of ultra-high purity nitrogen, oxygen, argon and other gases will be supplied to Visionpower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (VSMC), the joint venture formed by Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation and NXP Semiconductors.

As part of Air Liquide's comprehensive Carrier Gas solution, this state-of-the-art plant is designed to deliver ultra-high purity gases with an optimized footprint and best-in-class energy efficiency, providing exceptional value to VSMC by enhancing both reliability and efficiency.

Strategically located within the Tampines Wafer Fab Park, one of Singapore’s four key wafer fabrication hubs, the new facility will bolster Singapore’s position as a global semiconductor powerhouse. With the semiconductor industry accounting for more than 20 % of the country’s manufacturing output, this investment reflects Air Liquide’s dedication to supporting Singapore’s industrial and economic growth.

In response to the rapid changes in the semiconductor industry, Air Liquide is investing substantially in major semiconductor hubs to meet the increasing demand for energy-efficient chips. This new production plant is set to commence operations in 2026, further strengthening Air Liquide's presence and long-term commitment in the region.

Andritz Launches Electrolyzer Gigafactory in Germany

June 10 – The new facility has an initial annual production capacity of approximately one gigawatt which corresponds to approximately 160 to 200 electrolyzers per year. At the Erfurt site, key components for green hydrogen production have already been produced since March of this year, including electrolyzer cell stacks and phase separators which are then subjected to a pressure test and quality control. Depending on customer demand, the output can be flexibly scaled up.

The new Gigafactory is located on a site with a long-standing history of industrial manufacturing, where Andritz Schuler has been producing presses for many years. Around 350 people are working in Erfurt, almost 100 will be employed in the Electrolyzer Gigafactory in the future. This existing infrastructure provides a solid foundation for the efficient production and transport of electrolyzers.

The electrolyzers are based on the latest technology from Andritz’s partner Hydrogenpro. The first electrolyzers produced at the facility are destined for Salzgitter’s pioneering 100-megawatt hydrogen plant for low-CO2 steel production. All green hydrogen products made in Erfurt are CE-certified and meet European safety and performance standards.

June 11 – The German cleantech company Ineratec has recently inaugurated Era One, a Power-to-Liquid plant for the production of e-fuels and e-chemicals that will usher in a new era of sustainable mobility. The plant in Frankfurt-Höchst is the largest of its kind in Europe and will produce up to 2,500 tonnes of carbon-neutral e-fuels annually. This will make commercial-scale volumes of synthetic fuels available in Europe for the first time – and marks a decisive step towards achieving the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets. Ineratec started operating the plant a few weeks ago.

“With Era One, we offer a genuine solution to one of the biggest problems of our time: emissions in sectors that are hard to electrify, like aviation and shipping. Climate-neutral e-fuels are not just technologically possible. Era One shows that they are also ready for the market,” explained Tim Böltken, co-founder and CEO of Ineratec, at the grand opening ceremony, which was attended by high-ranking guests from politics, industry and science. “We are replacing fossil molecules with green molecules – and thereby making a decisive contribution to a climate-friendly future.”

The modular design of Ineratecs plants makes it possible to quickly and efficiently expand production capacity. By 2030, the company plans to increase its annual production several times over with additional projects. This scaling is crucial for achieving regulatory requirements, such as the Refuel EU Aviation regulation, which sets binding quotas for sustainable aviation fuels.

Era One uses CO₂ from biogenic sources and green hydrogen to produce synthetic crude oil, which is then processed into sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF), e-diesel and other products. The two feedstocks for the new plant come directly from the Frankfurt-Höchst industrial park where it is located. The CO2 comes from a biogas plant that recycles waste, and the hydrogen is a byproduct of chlorine production. Ineratec e-fuels are “drop-in ready”, meaning they can be used without any modifications to existing systems, such as aircraft engines. Synthetic crude oil can be used not only to produce sustainable fuel but also base chemicals, such as in the production of sustainable plastics. Thus, the technology also contributes to the sustainable transformation of the chemical industry.

June 11 – BASF has successfully started the commercial operation of its Black Mass plant in Schwarzheide, Germany. This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant milestone for BASF’s battery recycling business. It is one of the biggest commercial Black Mass plants in Europe, with an annual processing capacity of up to 15,000 tons of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries and production scrap. This equals roughly 40,000 electric vehicle batteries per year.

The successful start of the commercial operation of this plant therefore marks an important step for the European battery industry. Battery recycling is a key factor in increasing independence from primary raw material sources and meeting the ambitious requirements of circular economy policies. Black mass production is a key step in the battery recycling process and is based on mechanical treatment of the batteries. The Black Mass contains high amounts of key metals used to produce cathode active materials (CAM): lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. These valuable metals can be chemically recovered and used to produce new CAM, enabling circularity and reducing the carbon footprint compared to using only primary raw materials.

June 19 – Neoenergia has begun construction of one of the country’s first green hydrogen (H₂V) plants, located in Taguatinga, in the Federal District. The plant will operate as a refueling point for light and heavy vehicles, with an investment of over R$30 million. The project is part of the Research, Development and Innovation (R&DI) Program, regulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), and is scheduled to open in October.

The unit will be powered by a photovoltaic plant and will contribute to the decarbonization of sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as automotive transport. The choice of Taguatinga, close to Brasília, was strategic: in addition to being a political and economic hub, the region offers visibility and viability for the implementation of an unprecedented infrastructure focused on mobility with zero CO₂ emissions.

The plant will also be a center of knowledge and innovation, fostering the development of green hydrogen as an energy vector. The inauguration will take place at a strategic time, with Brazil preparing to host COP 30, reinforcing Neoenergia's leading role in the global climate agenda.

June 23 – John Wood Group (Wood) and its joint venture (JV) partner, Tendrill International, has secured a five-year contract with Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) for brownfield engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services.

Under the contract, the Tendrill-Wood JV will deliver integrated, end-to-end brownfield EPC projects, from conceptual design through commissioning and start-up, across BSP offshore and onshore assets.

BSP is the largest oil and gas producer in Brunei Darussalam, contributing significantly to Brunei Darussalam’s daily oil and gas production.

Tendrill-Wood employs approximately 1,000 people, 70 % of which are Bruneian. Under this contract, the JV will continue to invest in the development of local expertise and the supply chain.

This is a five-year contract which includes a two-year extension option.

June 23 – Buenos Aires takes a major step toward environmental sustainability with the launch of the Riachuelo System, the largest wastewater treatment project ever built in Latin America. Developed in three main lots, two of which were constructed by the Webuild Group, the system is now operational with the commissioning of Lot 2 by Webuild’s subsidiary, Fisia Italimpianti.

This milestone marks the completion of one of the world’s largest water pretreatment plants, representing a strategic infrastructure project co-financed by the World Bank. The Riachuelo System will enhance sanitation services for over 4.3 million people in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area and support the environmental recovery of the Río de la Plata. Once fully operational, it will treat up to 2.3 million cubic metres of wastewater per day and expand sewer access to 1.5 million additional residents across 14 municipalities.

Lot 2, scheduled for delivery to client Aysa by the end of July, comprises an inlet pumping station with a capacity of 36 cubic metres per second, a pretreatment facility for 27 cubic metres per second, and an outlet pumping station.

Lot 2 is central to the three-phase Riachuelo System: Lot 1 collects the wastewater; Lot 2 handles pretreatment; and Lot 3, also completed by Webuild, discharges treated water into the Río de la Plata via a 12-kilometre subfluvial tunnel, built 40 metres beneath the riverbed. With an internal diameter of 4.3 metres, this tunnel carries the water to an advanced diffuser system consisting of 34 vertical steel pipes (“risers”) that ensure uniform and safe dispersion of treated water along the river bottom. This highly complex engineering feat earned the project the prestigious ITA International Tunneling Award in 2021.

June 26 – Saipem has been awarded from Enilive, Eni’s company dedicated to biorefining, biomethane production, smart mobility solutions and the distribution of all energy carriers for mobility, a new contract for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities aimed at expanding the Enilive biorefinery in Porto Marghera, near Venice, valued at approximately 155 million euros.

The award is part of the recently renewed collaboration agreement on biorefining between the two companies and follows Eni’s assignment to Saipem of the contract for the start of preliminary detailed engineering activities, procurement services, and the purchase of critical equipment for the same project, communicated last March.

The project involves increasing the plant's capacity from the current 400,000 to 600,000 tons per year and the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) starting from 2027.

With the award of this new contract, Saipem confirms its commitment to the energy transition sector and its positioning in the biorefining segment.

June 26 – Thyssenkrupp Nucera has received a new order in the field of chlor-alkali technology. Chemical Marketing and Distribution Company (CMDC), part of Basic Chemical Industries Company (BCI), has commissioned Thyssenkrupp Nucera to implement the next expansion phase of its chlor-alkali plant in Jubail Industrial City. The leading international provider of electrolysis technologies will supply its energy-efficient and environmentally friendly membrane technology. BCI is one of the largest chemical companies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and has been listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange (TASI) since 2008.

The contract, valued at approximately 15 million euros, covers the supply, delivery, and provision of equipment, spare parts, and engineering services for the expansion. Using the latest BM2.7 single-element generation from Thyssenkrupp Nucera, chemical plants benefit from improved energy efficiency and performance through innovative, energy-saving design elements.
