The hydrogen ramp-up is just beginning and Dechema is right in the middle of the projects. Hardly any other organization has so much concentrated know-how. PROCESS Worldwide spoke to Dechema Managing Director Andreas Förster and Head of Energy and Climate Florian Ausfelder about the current status of the discussions.

“Hydrogen is the champagne of the energy transition” is a popular quote from energy economist Claudia Kemfert. What do you think of this statement, Mr. Förster?

Andreas Förster: Champagne is expensive and not accessible to everyone. Hydrogen produced with renewable energy sources is also expensive compared to conventional hydrogen — in this respect, the comparison is correct. On the other hand, champagne is replaceable, e.g. with sparkling wine or no drink at all. But for the energy transition, if we really think it through, green hydrogen is not champagne that I can do without. Without green hydrogen, we cannot defossilize the chemical industry. For me, the comparison is therefore somewhat misleading.
