Since the use of LNG as a fuel for sips, trucks or in power generation requires a wide grid of decentralized sites, Linde hopes to fill a blank with its new Star LNG concept: This modular plant building kit shall provide companies with the necessary tools to build complex LNG-plants from pre-assembled modules. The technology is just the same as in big, tailor-made liquefaction plants, including gas scrubbing, liquefaction, storage and loading/unloading terminals.
For this prupose, the specialists developed a so called “Process Toolboox” that shall cover around 90 % of typical gas applications. The standard scenarios is based on a net liquefaction capacity of 200 tons/day, enhanced by several alternative concepts with documentation and a plug-and-play 3D- CAD model. For large-scale applications, it is possible to modify the concept for capacities up to 3000 tons/day, the company states.
Modularisation in LNG Production
Modularization provides significant advantages for LNG production, insiders believe. Modular plants provide the same safety level as complex, large-scale LNG plants while ensuring a quicker EPC process and lower investment costs. The incorporation of Linde’s efficient Limum-process enables a secure and easy operation, while special modules for pre- or post-liquefaction as well as piping allow for a complex application scenario.
The modular concept can be adapted to individual applications, as natural gas comes in many forms: While ideal gas can be directly liquefied without further treatment, typical gas mixtures of methane, heavy carbon-hydrates, nitrogen and carbon dioxide require ad- and absorption or cryogenic rectification prior to the liquefaction. That this concept is by now means a mere pipe dream is underlined by existing applications in Australia, China and Norway.
