Just as ‘Android’ and ‘Apple’ take advantage of Ethernet, Cloud and Wireless together, the same methodology applies to PAC oriented control systems and PC based control systems in the industrial world.

This is really a game changer: historically PACs used proprietary networks and then shifted to a phase of open automation networks such as DeviceNet, Profibus, Interbus, whilst PC based systems have a long association with Ethernet and connectivity around the enterprise.

The Evolution of the PAC–Species

With contemporary PAC oriented control systems such as Integrated Architecture from Rockwell Automation being built around EtherNet/IP, the customers’ ability to exploit data to improve their operational productivity and efficiencies have reached new highs. With the assistance of today’s technology, one can witness the data on ‘live energy’ and also undertake appropriate actions to reduce the usage of energy.

“There is an App for that” has become a common phrase in everyday life. Programming of both control systems and PACs has evolved. For example, the advent of Add on Profiles (AOP) in the Rockwell Automation Logix configuration environment makes accessing data from variable speed drives, Endress & Hauser instruments, Cisco switches and other devices simple. This approach is similar to the iOS or Android app that makes planning a train journey so much easier.

Growing Together or Falling Apart?

In conclusion, there is no doubt that both PAC and PC based systems have a bright future. Both systems drive innovation and prove beneficial for customers and the industrial automation sector as a whole. I believe that we will continue to see closer alignment of both solutions, so whichever camp you are in, enjoy the innovation ride.
