Paris, France – Paris-based Technip, S.A. will provide the Thai PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) subsidiary PTTGC America with ethylene technology licensing and the process design package for its ethane cracker in Belmont County, Ohio, USA. The plant, with an expected capacity of 1,000 KTA, will use low cost ethane from the region’s Utica and Marcellus shale deposits.

Key technology components include Technip’s proprietary USC furnaces preferred for high-capacity, low-cost gas cracking capabilities as well as Technip’s well-established ethylene recovery system. The project will be executed by Technip’s operating center in Houston, Texas, USA.

The shale gas boom in North America has made US petrochemical manufacturers into some of the lowest-cost producers globally. The result has been a sharp increase in investment in ethylene production and derivatives capacity from foreign chemical and petrochemical manufacturers in the US petrochemical market. In line with this, PTTGCA’s facility in Ohio will be part of its first world-scale petrochemical complex outside of Thailand. A final investment decision is expected in 2016 or 2017.
