Interference-prone transmission paths for measurement and control signals can be effectively protected by using signal conditioners. The picture shows components of Pepperl+Fuchs’ SC-System (left: 6 mm wide modules save space and can be used up to 70 °C; right: transmitter power supplies belong to the most frequent used interface modules, here the Smart version.) Effective Protection against Faults by Using Signal Conditioners

The operation of high-quality field devices and process control systems can only be as effective as the signal they receive. However, the signal lines are exposed to numerous sources of interference. Galvanic isolation of the signal circuit between the field and process control system offers effective protection at a relatively low cost. It avoids the risks involved with a direct connection between field devices and the controller.

Keeping RO at Peak Performance

Proper Monitoring Increases Reverse Osmosis Efficiency and Membrane Life

Scaling, fouling and oxidation are the natural enemies of reverse osmosis (RO) systems in water treatment—especially in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Proper process monitoring and control of critical parameters such as pH, ORP, conductivity, flow, temperature and differential pressure can provide advanced warning and protection of scaling, fouling or chemical attacked. If early warnings are ignored, the membrane may become irreparably damaged.

Interview: Currenta’s In-House Climate Protection Program is Producing Results

The chemical park management company Currenta is a joint venture which was set up by Bayer and Lanxess. The company launched the A++ Efficiency Class climate protection program in April 2008. Currenta manages it’s “chempark” with sites in Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen, and it sees the program as an opportunity to substantially reduce carbon dioxide emissions. PROCESS asked Dr. Klaus Schäfer, Chairman of the Executive Board at Currenta, about some of the details.
