The Middle East and North Africa region has developed certified circular polymers for the first time by converting oil derived from plastic waste. The project aims to establish a domestic value chain for the advanced recycling of plastics in Saudi Arabia.

Under the terms of the collaboration, Sabic and Plastic Energy’s advanced recycling unit will receive pre-sorted and treated plastic waste from Siemer’s sorting plant in Germany. The unit will convert the plastic waste into pyrolysis oil which will then be treated and used as alternative feedstock by Sabic to produce certified circular polymers.

Covestro has plans to enter into open-ended discussions with Adnoc but as of now the conditions of an agreement between the two parties have not been finalized as everything will depend on the upcoming discussions.

Neste has partnered with Suntory, Eneos and Mitsubishi Corporation to supply its renewable feedstock made from 100 % bio-based raw materials for the production of PET resins. Suntory, the Japanese beverage company will then use the PET resins to produce PET bottles.

Under a joint venture agreement between Braskem and SCG Chemicals, both the parties have established a new company called Braskem Siam Company. The new firm aims to produce bio-ethylene from bio-ethanol dehydration and will also commercialize the ‘I'm green’ bio-based Polyethylene, using the Ete Evergreen technology.

For the first time in the Mena region, oil which is processed from plastic waste has been converted into ISCC+ certified circular polymers. The plastic pyrolysis oil was processed at the Satorp refinery in Jubail, Saudi Arabia and then used as a feedstock by Petrokemya to produce certified circular polymers.

Solvay has launched SCS certified Rhodianyl polymers which are produced from 100 % recycled content. These polymers can be used in the consumer goods industry as well as the engineering plastics sector.

Lyondell Basell has successfully completed the acquisition of Mepol Group. Under the terms of the contract, Mepol and its subsidiaries Polar and Industrial Technology Investments Poland, will be subsidiaries in Lyondell Basell's Advanced Polymer Solutions business unit.
