The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in its latest report ‘Geopolitics of the Energy Transformation: The Hydrogen Factor’ elaborates on the new global power dynamics in the background of a hydrogen economy. It also states that green hydrogen has the potential to disrupt global trade and bilateral energy relations with new hydrogen exporters and users.

India has entered into a collaboration with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to strengthen the country’s renewable energy in order to become a leading producer of green hydrogen. Under the terms of the contract, the two will assess the potential of green hydrogen as an enabler of the country’s transition and as a new source of national energy exports. India is also launching a National Green Hydrogen Mission that will help in the production, storage, distribution, and application technologies of green hydrogen.

Origin Materials has plans to develop its second manufacturing plant, Origin 2 at Geismar, Louisiana, USA. The facility is expected to convert an estimated 1 million dry metric tons of wood residues annually in order to produce carbon-negative materials and hydrothermal carbon which will be used to manufacture PET plastic and be used in fuel pellets respectively.

Under the new joint venture agreement, BASF and Heraeus will establish a new company called ‘BASF Heraeus (China) Metal Resource Co.’ in China. The collaboration will enable a circular economy solution as precious metals will be recovered from spent automotive catalysts in the country.

Under a contract signed between thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers and Shell, thyssenkrupp will engineer, procure and fabricate a 200 MW electrolysis plant based on its large-scale 20 MW alkaline water electrolysis module for the mega ‘Hydrogen Holland I’ project in the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The project will produce green hydrogen for the industry and transport sector in the region.

McPhy’s innovative electrolysis technology ‘Augmented McLyzer’ will be used for the 100-MW electrolysis plant in Sines, Portugal which forms a part of the mega GreenH2Atlantic project. The electrolysis platform is expected to supply green hydrogen for industrial as well as energy applications and will also help in the decarbonization of Europe.

Reliance has entered into a MOU with India’s Gujarat state to invest 80 billion dollars in green energy as well as other projects. The deal includes the establishment of the mega renewable energy power plant along with the development of a green hydrogen eco-system.

Masdar, Siemens Energy and Total Energies have signed a collaboration agreement on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2022, to act as co-developers for a demonstrator plant project, which will be established at Masdar City, Abu Dhabi’s flagship sustainable urban development.

Haldor Topsoe has entered into a 51-million-dollar loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support its research in the development of low-carbon technologies for the production of green hydrogen, green ammonia, biofuels, and electrified methanol.
