The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has been granted the first patent for a method to simultaneously extract carbon dioxide and hydrogen from seawater. This single process provides all the raw materials necessary for the production of synthetic liquid hydrocarbon fuels.

Under the agreement, Air Liquide will offer a technology licence as well as basic engineering for a hydrogen production unit which will be installed on the Balikpapan refinery site in Indonesia.

With an annual production capacity of 45,000 tonnes, the massive plant will offer hydrogen peroxide in three concentrations – 35 %, 50 % and 60 %. The firm also has plans to invest 103 million dollars in the next 3-5 years for capacity expansion of the chemical complex.

Exxon Mobil has started operations of a new unit at its Antwerp refinery in Belgium to convert heavy, higher-sulfur residual oils into high-value transportation fuels such as marine gasoil and diesel.

On completion, the new facility is expected to produce 30 tonnes of high purity liquid hydrogen per day. The plant is being established owing to the increase in demand from multiple sectors.

Under the terms of the contract, Technip FMC will be in charge of addressing debottlenecks of Midor’s existing units and will also be responsible for the delivery of new units.

With this new catalyst, the institute has proven that catalysts found on earth that are abundant, cheap, and benign metals such as iron or manganese can be considered as possible alternatives for challenging reduction reactions.

Solvay and its affiliate Peroxidos do Brasil have agreed with Suzano Papel e Celulose to build a small dedicated hydrogen peroxide production unit using Solvay's myH2O2 technology, at Suzano's pulp mill site in Imperatriz, Maranhão, Brazil.

The special anniversary ceremony took place in Leverkusen, Germany where Dr. Dirk Müller, Head of the Global Technology & Innovation team focused on the significance of catalysis for the chemical industry.

Solvay has started hydrogen peroxide production at its new plant in Zhenjiang, China.
