Impressive durability
25 years later, when upon the recom- mendation of the French health and safety authorities the two oldest tanks were replaced as a precautionary measure, the engineers were amazed at what they discovered. “Analysis results showed that the PVDF lining had retained 90% or more of its original properties,” said Perrinaud. The list of characteristics assessed included hardness, tensile strength and elongation at break.
PVDF is also highly resistant to chemicals other than bromine. “PVDF linings stand up well to sulfuric acid and hydrogen halides such as hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acid," added Perrinaud. In addition, PVDF can be suitable for Atex applications. Arkema’s Kynar 340 PVDF product for example is conductive and complies with Atex regulations for flammable substances.
Because the PVDF-lined bromine tanks had such an outstanding long-term track record, they were simply replaced with containers that have a similar design.
