EU Trade Surplus Up 2.3 Billion Euros
April 2012 trade data indicate a €16 billion overall EU chemicals net trade surplus. Trades with the NAFTA region contributed significantly to the additional surplus generated in January-April, reaching €4 billion, up €1.2 billion compared with the same period in 2011.
Also trades of the EU economies with the Rest of Europe was €4.6 billion in the first four months of 2012, up €0.5 billion compared with the same period of last year. A €1.8 billion surplus occurred with Asia, excluding Japan, and China, which fell €0.8 billion compared with the first four months of 2011.
German chemical producers were able to defend their top position in the world export rankings and the prospects are good for retaining top spot again this year ahead of the US, Belgium and China, exporting 150 million euros worth of chemical goods in 2011. Prices for Basic Inorganics Rise Significantly
Chemicals prices rose in May by 2.7 per cent, driven by the price for basic inorganics, which increased by 4 per cent during the period. Prices for petrochemicals rose by 0.6 per cent, while pharmaceuticals prices edged down by 1.4 per cent in May as compared with the year prior.
Sales Surpass 2008 Pre–Crisis Figures
EU chemicals sales for April 2012 were 2.0 per cent lower compared with April 2012. The overall sales level continues to surpass the pre-crisis peak reached at the beginning of 2008. Compared to full-year sales levels in 2008, the total value of sales through the first four months of 2012 was 5.8 per cent higher.
