Industry Insights: Process Automation Position Paper on APL Network Topologies for the Process Sector
Namur’s (User Association of Automation Technology in Process Industries) working Group 2.6 'Digital Process Communications' has recently published a Position paper which focuses on APL network topologies for the process sector.
Leverkusen/Germany – This position paper serves as a basis for discussion with manufacturers. It describes the requirements for APL network topologies for the process industry. The unique characteristics of the process industry, such as very long plant lifetimes and the resulting extended use of PCS and field devices, complex equipment, and strict safety and availability requirements, pose significant challenges for digital and network communication structures.
Introducing an Ethernet-based communication system requires specifying the topology requirements of such a system to be used, especially in the process industry. In addition to the requirements established in NE 074 (Fieldbus requirements) and NE 168 (Requirements for a field-level Ethernet communication system), there are additional requirements for network topologies. Security aspects are not part of this position paper. You can read the position paper here.
