They are designed to let gas in and liquids out. The vast surface area is the result of nano-sized inner channels, which create high porosity and expose huge volumes of gas to the catalysts’ chemically engineered surface, maximising the rate and selectivity of the chemical GTL-reactions. While much of the HPS catalyst R&D has been carried out at the Shell Technology Centre in Amsterdam, the manufacturing has been handled by Shell’s catalyst company, CRI/Criterion Inc, which has spent several years producing the volume of HPS catalyst required.
Gas-To-Liquid Plant: Dedicated Catalyst Facility
The HPS catalyst is produced at dedicated CRI Catalyst facilities in Europe, which have been designed specifically to supply the Pearl GTL plant, and employs a new type of manufacturing process. “The HPS catalyst is custom-made and so involves a more specialised production process,” explains CRI/Criterion’s Alan Del Paggio, Vice President, Upstream & Renewables. “Our new facility has been designed specifically to accommodate that, and allows us to make the volume of catalyst required in under half the time it would normally take.
