It already works in "Back to the Future": In the movie, the quirky inventor Doc Brown simply throws waste into a reactor called "Mr. Fusion", which powers the time machine built into a Delorean. The year 2015, to which the protagonists travel, has come and gone and gasoline is still being produced from naphtha. Traveling thanks to waste remains a vision for the time being - but that could change.
