Customised Standard

Even with the most comprehensive range of gear units it's impossible in this market to meet every theoretical option and customer requirement out of the box. As a matter of fact, regarding industrial gear units Mr. Holz assumes – taking into account even small modifications – that approx. 60 % of the systems delivered by SEW Eurodrive are engineered-to-order and some 40 % are assembled-to-order. This means that the SEW business unit Heavy Industrial Solutions receives – and what is absolutely common in the market – only a small number of orders where the company has no part in the design process or where an adaptation to application specific requirements is unnecessary.

Compared to standard catalogue systems, systems engineered-to-order have the disadvantage of extended delivery time and increased engineering cost. This also applies to some extend to systems assembled-to-order. In order to minimise this disadvantage and to better meet the customer demand for complete drive system solutions, SEW Eurodrive has introduced the “Application Drive” programmes, standardised and modular packages for specific applications, e.g. bucket elevators of belt conveyors.

For the customers this approach offers the advantage that the complete drive systems can be selected from a “catalogue”, which significantly reduces the amount of customisation and thus the costs and time to delivery.

Condition Monitoring

For an effective preventive maintenance – an important component to achieve high reliability and availability – it is necessary to continuously gather information on the condition of drive system. SEW Eurodrive offers a wide range of condition monitoring solutions for its gear motors, such as vibration sensor for bearings and gear wheel monitoring, oil aging sensors, break diagnosis systems, etc. According to Mr. Holz, as far as industrial gear units are concerned, there is still a slight backlog demand. However, sensors for oil aging and vibration analysis are already on offer, and additional technologies will be made available subsequently.

If requested, SEW Eurodive compares the acquired data with its own measurement results collected from numerous applications over many years, and, in this way, makes it possible for the customer to act and not just react.

More than a Product

It is obvious, that in today's competitive business environment simply providing a product is just not enough. In many
industries, the reliability of the drive
units is of utmost importance for the complete process chain. In case of a belt conveyor which connects a mine with an associated processing facility, for example, a failure of the conveyor drive system can cause a significant loss of profit in no time. More and more end users are therefore looking for what might be called a “carefree package.”

To ensure a high availability of the drive systems, SEW Eurodrive is offering a comprehensive package of individual services for maintenance called “Complete Drive Service,” which is also available for the industrial gear units. Part of this service kit are, for example, an inspection and maintenance service, a repair and spare parts service, a retrofit service as well as a condition monitoring service and a complete maintenance management.

A special characteristic of the repair and spare parts services is the fact, that it not only covers the company's own products. The specialists from SEW Eurodrive are also experienced in the repair and retrofit of third-party products, and the spare parts service includes couplings, oil coolers, sensors and motors, too.

Therefore, with its complete drive service, a comprehensive range gear units and its worldwide presence, SEW Eurodrive can be seen as a provider of truly complete system solutions. n
