Their high stiffness property can be effectively used in underground piping. Also, these pipes can be designed and manufactured as per client requirements. There are some common standards that are being followed nowadays: DIN 6965/16966, BS 7159, PS 15-69, AWWA C 950, ASTM 2310/2992/2996, AS 2634, API, ABS, ISO 14692 AND IS 12709.

Advantages of Reinforced Plastic Pipe

The financial advantage of FRP or GRP pipes can be measured in terms of life expectancy. There are cases where these piping systems have been used for more than 25 years with negligible maintenance cost. Its customized design also helps us reduce the per metre cost in comparison with metallic piping. FRP or GRP pipes are coming up to replace the conventional metal pipes. Owing to their cost and other advantages, nowadays they are carving their own niche market – not only in India but also everywhere in the world. Besides water treatment, these pipes are now progressively being used in chlor-alkali membrane cell plant, soda ash plant, non-ferrous metallurgy industries. Further they have replaced conventional pipes like ductile iron, concrete, carbon steel piping for long distance, cross country waterlines.

Availability for Different Applications

Based on the types of industrial requirements or service conditions, different types of FRP or GRP pipes are available. In fact, during manufacturing, the resin systems are selected based on the targeted application areas. There are several resin systems like – Polyester resin system, Bisphenol resin system, Vinyl ester resin system, Epoxy resin system etc. These pipes can be designed for 50 years of life. The design life is based on long-term tests results. In plant or long-distance piping architecture jointing is a common necessity, various types of jointing systems work with FRP or GRP pipes, such as – butt &wrap, bell &spigot double ring, double ring coupling, bell &spigot double ring keylock and adhesive bonding.

Butt & Wrap joint not only assures 100 per cent leakage free joints, it is as strong as the pipes itself. The mechanical type bell & spigot jointing systems are generally used in underground piping, where butt & wrap joint is not possible, and equipped with leak detection system.Leakproofness is achieved in all the above mentioned jointing systems.

Trends in the Industry

FRP or GRP pipes are being used in India and globally in various chemical process industries and waste water treatment plants with great success. To be very specific, their application is widening in the industries like – chlor-alkali membrane cell plant, soda ash plant, zinc smelter refinery, copper smelter refinery, industrial waste water treatment, desalination plant, water convenience for city or regional infrastructure, power project ( FGD + cooling water line) and so on.Their use is bound to grow in the fields of desalination, power, water reuse and wastewater treatment.
