With an aim to carry out sustainable operations, many industries are now increasingly making use of recycled or treated water which are sourced from wastewater treatment plants instead of using limited fresh water resources. New areas of interest such as green hydrogen production is also following the same route. Smart technologies are also being explored to optimize water usage, minimize wastage and even tap innovative ways to obtain water for industrial operations.

The next world war will be fought over water, according to numerous industry experts and technical studies. To a large extent this may be the case if nothing is done about it. Today, various industries across the globe utilize fresh or natural resources of water for their operations. However, this is a matter of grave concern as water is a limited resource and must be utilized efficiently at all costs. This is where wastewater treatment plants come in.

These wastewater treatment units treat and purify the wastewater after which it can be reused for diverse applications. For instance, the US-based firm Ecolab has recently launched a new wastewater treatment plant in Singapore. The plant which is designed to handle variable bio-treater wastewater makes use of Ecolab's ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membrane system to treat and reuse up to 24,000 cubic metres of wastewater every month!
