China: Fatal Incident Explosion at Chinese Gas Plant Kills 12 - More Fatalities Feared

At least 12 people were killed in a gas plant explosion in the central Chinese province of Henan. Xinhua news agency reported that the explosion happened in the air separation unit of the Yima gas factory of Henan Coal Gas.

Yima/China — On Friday evening, an explosion in Yima occured at an air separation unit of the gas factory run by Henan Coal Gas. The blast was felt miles away, shattering windows as far as two miles from the plant, Chinese state media reported. The exact number of fatalities was still unclear. While The New York times speaks of 10 people, abc News reports of 15 fatalities. Another 15 people were seriously injured.

Aearlial images of the plant show a massive destruction. The official news agency Xinhua reports that the blast didn't happen in the gas tank areas. All production has been stopped. CBC quoted the local environmental protection department as saying that some wastewater from the blast and firefighting has flowed into the local river. The Yima municipal government announced that it was building a barrier to stop the contaminated water from heading downstream.
